Towards a Protection of the Syrian Cultural Heritage: A summary of the National and International Responses Vol IV
Heritage for Peace team Leonardo Leckie, Emma Cunliffe, and Bastien Varoutsikos have compiled a fourth report of actions taken by cultural heritage organisations to preserve and protect of Syria’s cultural heritage, covering the period of October 2015 to December 2016.

In light of the recent debates regarding the propaganda value of the destruction of heritage, Heritage for Peace has preparaed a statement regarding our work, particularly with reference to the newsletter.

1 December 2014: DAMAGE ASSESSMENT TRAINING FOR STAFF OF THE SYRIAN INTERIM MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND FAMILY AFFAIRS
Heritage for Peace held a ‘Damage Assessment for Cultural Heritage’ training in Gaziantep, Turkey from 23 – 26 November in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Family Affairs of the Syrian Interim Government. The training was the last phase of a larger project funded by the Dutch Government.

UK based Archaeologist, Dr. Silvia Perini and Heritage consultant, Dr. Emma Cunliffe, in association with Heritage for Peace, have compiled a second list which provides details about cultural heritage organisations and the actions they are taking towards the preservation and protection of Syria’s tangible cultural heritage.

24 June 2014: DESIGN TASK FORCE ON ANTIQUITIES AND MUSEUMS
After discussions with the Ministry of Culture and Family Affairs of the Syrian Interim Government in Gaziantep, Turkey Heritage for Peace was asked to design a Task Force on Antiquities and Museums with funding from The Dutch Government for the first phase of the project. The proposed structure for the Task Force by Heritage for Peace was sent to the Deputy Minister of Culture and Family Affairs on July 14, 2014, and is now under consideration

04 June 2014: INVITATION TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE DIRECTORS’ – SYRIA
Heritage for Peace, within the framework of the international co-operation established under the auspices of UNESCO Observatory for the Safeguarding of Syria’s Cultural Heritage, invites archaeologists who prior to 2011 were directing archaeological research projects in Syria, to participate in a brief survey.

13 May 2014: SANTANDER DECLARATION AND OUTCOMES
The international conference, ‘Heritage and Conflict. Learning from previous experiences to safeguard cultural heritage during the Syrian crisis’, was held on 23-24 April, 2014 at the University of Cantabria, Spain. The conference brought together national and international experts to discuss possible measures to help reduce the risk of damage to Syria’s material culture and to fight illegal trafficking of antiquities.
